Today is Emmeline Pankhurst Day so to mark the day and as a small homage to the Women's Suffrage Movement I have created a couple of items of wire and bead crocheted jewellery in the Suffragette colours of White, Purple and Green. I have also named these pieces after the founder of the movement Emmeline Pankhurst.
White represents purity
Purple loyalty, freedom and dignity and perhaps Royalty too
Green stands for hope.
Usually Suffragette jewellery is made with amethyst, peridot and pearls. I have elected to use glass beads instead.
My crocheted "Emmeline" brooch and earrings have both been inspired by the Suffragette rosette so I crocheted them in the round.
Both are now available on my website
The Suffragette Movement fought for the right of Women to vote in the Early 20th Century. They campaigned peacefully using art and debate and they also used acts of civil disobedience and non violent confrontation such as disruption of public meetings and attacks of property.
Similar tactics are now being used in other campaigns today.
I do wonder what Emmeline Pankhurst and all the other women involved in winning the right for women to vote in the UK would feel about their achievement today after having just had one of the lowest voter turnouts in a general election since Women could vote!
